Mud terrain tires are the serious off-road choice — built for drivers who regularly take their truck or 4×4 well beyond what a standard all-terrain tire can handle. Deep tread blocks, wide voids, and reinforced sidewalls define the mud terrain category, and for good reason: when you’re driving through thick mud, deep ruts, or loose rocky terrain in Alberta’s backcountry, you need a tire that can claw for grip and self-clean as it rotates.
The tread design of a mud terrain tire is engineered specifically for low-traction surfaces. The large, chunky blocks dig into soft ground, and the wide spaces between them expel mud, rocks, and debris before they can pack the tread and kill traction. The sidewalls are reinforced and often feature additional traction lugs for when you’re crawling over rocks or sidestepping through deep ruts — areas where a standard tire would suffer a sidewall puncture.
On-road, mud terrain tires are noisier and less fuel-efficient than all-terrain or highway tires. The same aggressive tread that excels in mud creates more road noise and slightly higher rolling resistance on pavement. For drivers who use their truck primarily on the highway, a mud terrain is overkill. But for serious off-road use — overlanding, trail running, or working in muddy conditions on a job site — they’re the right tool.
Mud terrain tires are available in a range of sizes to suit full-size trucks and large SUVs. Canada Tire Pro carries a selection of mud terrain tires at our Calgary and Edmonton locations, with same-day fitting available.
