All-weather tires are the best of both worlds for Alberta drivers: three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) certified for severe winter conditions, yet built to perform year-round without the need for seasonal changeovers. If you’ve been frustrated by the hassle of storing two sets of tires or paying for seasonal swaps, all-weather tires are worth a serious look.
The key difference between all-weather and all-season tires is the 3PMSF certification. To earn that rating, a tire must pass standardized traction tests in genuine winter conditions — it’s not just a marketing label. This means an all-weather tire is legally and practically acceptable for winter driving in Alberta, whereas a standard all-season tire is not winter certified. If Calgary or Edmonton gets hit with an overnight cold snap and fresh snow, you’ll have the confidence that your tires were built for exactly that.
All-weather tires achieve this by using a rubber compound that stays pliable at low temperatures (like a winter tire) while still performing well in warm conditions (unlike a dedicated winter tire, which wears quickly in summer heat). The tread pattern typically features sipes and grooves that evacuate water in summer rain and channel snow in winter — genuinely versatile rather than a compromise in either direction.
They do have limits. In extreme winter conditions — sustained -20°C or colder, heavy ice, or deep packed snow — a dedicated winter tire will still outperform an all-weather. But for the majority of Calgary and Edmonton winters, all-weather tires are an excellent one-tire solution.
Canada Tire Pro stocks a strong selection of all-weather tires in all popular sizes for cars, crossovers, SUVs, and light trucks. Same-day fitting is available at our Calgary and Edmonton locations.
